Need for translation is growing steadily
According to the article Translation Services: Bullet-Proof Business? published in inc.com, the translation industry doesn’t seem to have been affected by the economic downturn. Much the opposite, in fact – the industry is projected to grow by 12% this year in the US, and a recent US Bureau of Labor Statistics report forecast a staggering 42% growth in translation and interpretation services from 2010 to 2020.
The news is not as surprising as one might first think. According to the US Census Bureau, there are over 35 million foreign-born people currently living in the US. This group constitutes a large population in the country – one which marketers are constantly looking for ways to reach more effectively.
The article addresses the issue of translating a “meaning from one language and culture to another without inflicting harm in the process”, which is said to require a professional interpreter with a working knowledge of both languages. It goes without saying that free, machine-powered translation services are far from offering a solution for this.
